Skeletal System Herbs
This page includes herbs that exhibit actions on the skeletal system such as: remineralization, stimulating to osteoblasts, regenerating, phytoestrogenic, etc. The herbs listed here do not fall under all of these categories; with each herb I have included what its main effect would be on the skeletal system, but many of these herbs have even more effects on this system, and on many other systems in the body — especially the muscular system. Some things to keep in mind: first, many herbs that benefit the skeletal system may also have endocrine effects and could be especially beneficial for menopausal women when taken properly, but could have contraindications for those sensitive to phytoestrogens. Second, some of these herbs should only be used topically for skeletal issues, and are best used in formulas with other herbs; exercise caution and speak to an herbalist if you are trying to expedite bone healing. Third, protein is key in healing bones, so if you have broken a bone, supplement with protein first and foremost! Lastly — and obviously — if you believe you have broken a bone, please go to the hospital. Please see the Materia Medica page, or Teas & Guides, for more information on specific herbal actions.
